Whenever we remove a tooth, our patient has the opportunity to decide the next step. If a tooth is removed and nothing is done with the extraction site, the jaw bone will degenerate and change shape during healing, causing your teeth to shift.

There is a limited amount of time between extraction and generalized shifting because your teeth will immediately begin to compensate for the loss of a tooth. Your ability to speak, chew and bite will be impacted, so the timing of the next phase of dental treatment is important.

If you opt to replace your missing tooth with a bridge, it must be molded and placed before your teeth shift. If you choose to restore your missing tooth with a dental implant, a sturdy jaw bone is imperative.
